An interview with Leah Mitchell
We sat down with incredible local florist Leah Mitchell, to discuss wedding flowers and a few tips to help you get the most our of your wedding flower budget for maximum impact.
Whats the best way to repurpose ceremony flowers to incorporate them into the rest of the day ?
Make sure the flowers are able to be moved easily, for example a ground nest or plinth arrangements made in multiple parts. This is much easier to repurpose than a huge full coverage arbour.
How to make your budget stretch that bit further for maximum impact
Simple thinks like a coloured table runner can make a huge impact. Also, if you have a limited budget don't worry about the small items such as tossing petals or signage florals. They can add up very quickly and don't have the wow factor a large statement piece has.
Something to think about when doing share platters on the tables is......
Yes you need to leave space on the table for food platters, but this doesn't mean you can only have bud vases. A few beautiful arrangements placed down the table will leave space for food but have more impact on the tablescape.
In your opinion what’s the thing brides shouldn’t skimp on
Well I may be biased.. because I'm known for my bridal bouquets, but don't skimp on this! It's photographed so much during the day and a beautiful bouquet will make you feel like an absolute queen!
If a bride has a big budget for flowers, where is it best to allocate these funds? Ie more reception / more expensive flowers for maximum impact .
A statement ceremony piece that can be repurposed is a good choice. It frames you so beautifully during those important moments. Also definitely focus your floral budget on your reception. This is where you spend the majority of your day, and you really want to create an amazing ambience for your guests.
How does a bride choose flowers in season
Don't worry, that's my job! Flowers are unpredictable and availability changes week to week. I encourage my couples to focus on a colour palette and vibe and don't worry too much about specific flowers. Of course, if a flower is sentimental I'll do everything I can to include it.
What’s trending in 2024/2025
Lots of interesting textures and more personalised weddings. I always encourage my couples to go with florals that they love, not just because its on trend
What are you seeing less of today than 5 years ago ?
We are seeing less muted palettes and more fun with colour. Which I absolutely love!
What’s something most venues don’t allow? If anything?
A lot of venues don't allow naked flames, which we can help with! We have lots of hire options for candle sleeves or enclosed candles.
Any Advice?
My best advice is find a florist that listens to you and your vision. A good florist can help you manage your budget and create the vision in your head. Experience is definitely a plus. Lots of my reviews read how my couples couldn't believe I took their vision and made it better than they imagined. This is from years of experience working with couples, curating their vision and really listening to how they want their day to look.
